Captain Leo Parrot LeBron was born on July 1, 1876, in Guthrie. He was the son of Frank LeBron and Elizabeth H. LeBron and the grandson of Brigadier General Parrott of Iowa. LeBron's early education and influences were deeply rooted in Iowa, where he attended the Kemper Military Academy and Iowa State University, showcasing his early inclination towards leadership and military disciplines.

 

Career and Service

Before his military service, Captain LeBron was a civil engineer for the Fort Smith and Western Railway. His professional career is noted for contributions to the infrastructure and development within his community, particularly in the Guthrie and Keokuk areas. On August 6, 1917, LeBron volunteered for military service and was commissioned a captain in the Corps of Engineers. He was initially stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, before deploying overseas.

 

Military Service and Sacrifice

In January 1918, Captain LeBron sailed for France aboard the U.S. Transport, Tuscania, as part of the American effort in World War I. Tragically, on February 5, 1918, the Tuscania was torpedoed off the Irish coast by a German U-Boat. LeBron's life was cut short in this catastrophic event, which resulted in the loss of 101 men. His initial burial was on an island, with the cemetery land donated by Lord Morrison, but his remains were later returned to his birthplace, commemorated forever in the community he left behind.

 

Legacy and Commemoration

Captain LeBron's impact on his community and the broader world is commemorated by the American Legion LeBron Post 58, which was named in his honor. He was the first member of the B.P.O.E. to be killed in World War I, marking a significant loss for the organization and demonstrating the depth of his commitment to service.
